TRAI Do Not Disturb (DND) App: The Ultimate Solution to Block Spam Calls and SMS in India

What is the DND App?

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) recently launched a new updated version of its Do Not Disturb (DND 3.0) app. The app is designed to help Indian mobile users track, manage and report spam calls and unwanted promotional SMSs to put an end to pesky messages and relentless calls from insurance agents, banks, and real estate brokers, among others. It can be downloaded free of cost from both the Google Play Store (for Android-based mobile phones) and the Apple App Store (for iOS-based mobile phones).

DND 3.0 App Features:

  • Set preferences: Users can register communication preferences and opt to block all commercial communication or selectively allow specific categories such as banking, insurance, credit card, education, health, among others
  • Report spam : Users can report spam calls and SMSs directly from their call log making it faster and easier to take action
  • Track status of complaints: Users can track the progress and resolution of their complaints in real time
  • Crowdsourced intelligence: The app gathers spam data from users and shares it with telecom service providers to enable swift and targeted action

Registration Process:

Step 1 – Users can download and install the app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store

Step 2 – Upon opening the app, users will be asked to register their mobile number. An OTP will be sent , which they need to enter to verify the number

Step 3 – Users can then customise their preferences by choosing the types of promotional calls and messages they wish to receive, or block entirely

Spam Reporting: Users can report a call or SMS on the DND app directly from the call log or messages list within seven days of receiving them.

What Happens After You Report?

When a complaint is registered, it is automatically forwarded to the relevant Telecom Service Provider (TSP). The TSP reviews the complaint against its call/message records. If a number accumulates five or more complaints within a 10-day period, enforcement action is initiated. TSPs follow a two-step penalty process:

  • First violation: The sender is barred from sending commercial communications for 15 days
  • Subsequent violations: The sender’s telecom resources are disconnected across all TSPs for up to 1 year, and the sender is blacklisted

Implementation of these measures has resulted in a notable decrease in complaints against unregistered telemarketers, from 1,89,419 in August 2024 to 1,34,821 in January 2025. As of March, 2025, over 1,150 senders have been blacklisted, and more than 18.8 lakh telecom resources have been disconnected.
