The Safer Internet India coalition aims to foster user welfare, trust and safety in the Indian digital economy and, in turn, supporting innovation-led growth. The coalition includes niche as well as multipurpose digital services, infrastructure providers and financial services.

Membership Categories

General Members

Membership is voluntary, without any financial commitments, andrenewable each year subject to participation in good faith.

Patron Members

Entities that provide minimum specified annual financial support towardsrunning the coalition are considered patron members. Patron Members receive allmembership benefits, as well as a seat on the governing council.

We welcome diverse perspectives to foster inclusive dialogue and innovation. We aim to drivechange by collaborating across industries, and sharing both knowledge and experiences.

Members proactively endeavour to build collective capacity for working towards a safe digitalecosystem and are:

  • The Safer Internet India (SII) coalition is a new initiative dedicated to addressing challenges such as online frauds, scams and spam.  Through collaboration with stakeholders across communications and digital industry verticals, SII aims to further a market-driven response to online harms, support policies that prioritise innovation and safety, and drive thought leadership in building a safer, more inclusive internet.

  • No, the coalition is not a legal entity or association. It operates as a collective identity managed by Koan Advisory Group, a public policy consulting firm, serving as the secretariat to coordinate activities and maintain institutional memory.

  • India’s rapid digital adoption has increased the surface area for online risks. The coalition aims to provide a unified platform to address challenges like cyber fraud, content moderation, and online safety, fostering ecosystem-wide collaboration

  • The coalition is open to:

    • Technology companies, telecom providers, banks, and fintech organisations

    • Digital application providers and other stakeholders in the digital ecosystem

    • Nonprofits, government agencies, and think tanks as institutional partners / affiliates

    • General Members: Voluntary participation without financial commitments

  • Funding comes from Patron Members, as well as voluntary project-specific sponsorships. This supports capacity-building programs, knowledge-sharing initiatives, and operational needs.

  • The coalition brings to light early warning trends, shares insights on online threats, and curates dialogues and knowledge on ecosystem-wide challenges.

  • The coalition maintains neutrality by focusing exclusively on ecosystem-wide challenges that affect multiple stakeholders, rather than engaging in brand-specific controversies. 

    Its role is to:

    • Facilitate collaborative solutions to systemic issues, such as fraud schemes or harmful content patterns, that require a multi-stakeholder approach.

    • Serve as a neutral platform where members can collectively address challenges without compromising their independent relationships or obligations.

  • The coalition will initially address a set of critical challenges in the digital ecosystem, including:

    • Fraud, Scams, and Spam: Tackling the increasing prevalence of cyber fraud, phishing attacks, and spam that exploit digital platforms and users.

    • Online Safety for Vulnerable Groups: Protecting women, children, and youth, who are disproportionately targeted by cyberbullying, harassment, exploitation, and other forms of online abuse.

    • AI Safety and AI for User Safety: Ensuring the responsible deployment of AI technologies to enhance user safety. This includes leveraging AI for effective content moderation, detecting harmful behaviours, and building tools for user protection, while addressing the ethical trade-offs involved.

  • Priorities are shaped collectively through the Governing Council, which comprises Patron Members, and the Working Committee, which includes representatives from all member organisations. This ensures that all voices are heard and initiatives reflect collective needs.

  • The coalition focuses on ecosystem-wide challenges that require collaboration across digital and financial industries and segments, involving key players from each. Unlike associations, it is not a corporate entity but a neutral platform for collective action.

  • Yes, members are encouraged to propose initiatives that align with the coalition’s mission.

  • The coalition facilitates knowledge-sharing between industry members, government agencies, and other stakeholders. By working collectively, it enables stakeholders to address complex challenges that span across platforms, applications, and services.

  • Yes, the coalition plans to release public reports, handbooks, and other resources to share insights and best practices. These will be made available in the Publications and Events sections of the website.
